The purpose of a guideline is to describe examination methods in such a way that a maximum of diagnostic information can be obtained with minimal use of the used resources. Guidelines are not supposed to describe customised examinations at individual institutions nor are they supposed to be hard and fast rules. Furthermore guidelines are not to lay down minimal examination methods that are just going through the acceptance process.
Guidelines are supposed to outline scientific knowledge and the opinion of experts for examination and treatment methods in nuclear medicine.
Unlike the English term “Guidelines” the German shall differentiate between “Leitlinien” (guidelines) and “Richtlinien” (directive).Whilst guidelines are considered to be an aid for clinicians and do not necessarily have to be followed, directives have a legally binding effect and can be consulted in the case of non-compliance sanctions.
